Can I start exercising with an injury?

As a Pilates instructor, I’m quite often approached by people who have an injury and would like to start doing Pilates. This might seem surprising, but Pilates is often recommended by doctors/physiotherapists/osteopaths etc as being a good way to improve a number of musculoskeletal issues as well as helping to manage other health problems such as fibromyalgia and arthritis, and in particular Pilates has a reputation for being good for bad backs.
While this is certainly true, Pilates is wonderful for improving joint health and strength, timing is everything. If you have an injury and want to start any new form of exercise, it’s advisable to see your doctor or a physiotherapist first to get a medical assessment before starting. I know it’s tempting to just take matters into our owns hands and get cracking, but you can make your injury worse if you start too soon and aren’t aware of what limitations you have, or if there are any movements you should be avoiding for the time being.
Many fitness instructors will ask you about your health before you join a class and I have often asked people to see their doctor or a physio first and to come back to me when they have more information. And sometimes the answer is yes it’s fine to start soon, but perhaps there a couple of exercises you’ll need to avoid.
If you have an injury and want to start increasing your movement, do see a medical professional first just to make sure your healing journey is as straightforward and positive as possible.
