Pilates is a mind body exercise method, developed by the late Joseph Pilates (1883-1967 and yes, that’s right – it’s named after a person. You can Google to see photos of Joe teaching in his pants!).
Joseph Pilates called his original method Contrology, i.e. moving our bodies with awareness and control, but it became known by others as the Pilates method.
Exercises are designed to improve core strength and stability, restore the natural, shock-absorbing curves of the spine and strengthen the muscles around the joints to promote more efficient movement. Pilates provides a full body workout, is great for improving posture and correcting muscle imbalances, and increases strength and mobility.
These days, contemporary Pilates is accessible for most people, and provides exercises suitable for all levels of fitness and experience. Most people think of Pilates as mat based exercise, as that's most common in the UK, but Pilates actually includes a lot of apparatus including the reformer, cadillac and chair.
Pilates is often recommended for those with stiffness and back pain, as it helps strengthen core and back muscles which support the spine and improve posture, reduces the likelihood of pain or discomfort and helps us to move more freely.
But above all PILATES IS FUN!!! You will be amazed by what your body can do! All my classes are lovely friendly groups and because I offer memberships everyone gets to know each other so it’s a proper community.
If you’re experiencing pain or stiffness, why not give Pilates a try?
