Did you know that Pilates is wonderful for improving your posture?
Pilates works all of the joints in the body, often in ways we don’t regularly move in day to day life. This means that over time we build more strength, create more efficient movement patterns and our muscles work more effectively. We also improve our body awareness.
These things help us to create better balance between the front/back, left/right of the body so muscles are able to work better and over time we see this in how we hold our bodies. Our muscles working more effectively also reduces our risk of injury, as we are less likely to experience sprains and strains when everything is working as it should be (i.e. areas of the body that are overworking/underworking are more likely to get injured). This is why Pilates is a great complement to other forms of exercise!
Posture can also impact our breathing and our core strength, as well as our balance (which as we get older can increase the risk of falling). For some of us (and speaking from personal experience), ongoing postural issues can also cause pain.
And if these reasons aren’t enough to get us moving more, finally, better posture looks nicer! We stand taller and hold our bodies better which can completely change how we look and feel about ourselves. I have a couple of clients who actually got taller with regular Pilates!
